Achieving His Goals: Grime MC Stomzy Scores A Hatrick AT The MOBO Awards
Last night the biggest stars and personalities from the world of black music, film, and sport, domestic and international, came together for the annual MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) Awards which celebrated it’s 22nd Birthday.
Moving from a live broadcast to recorded one, The MOBO Awards aired from 11:00pm on Channel 5, and was presented by TV/Radio presenter Maya Jama and former JLS member Marvin Humes at First Direct Arena in Leeds.

Providing the entertainment for the night were; Ray BLK, Davido, Tokio Myers, B Positive Choir, Not3s, Stefflon Don, and Yungen who all put on good performances, but by far the highlight of night were UK Rap duo, Krept And Konan who brought out surprise guest, Stormzy on stage to perform their track ‘Ask Flips’.
Leading the way in terms of gongs on the night was Stormzy bagging awards for ,’Best Male, ‘Best Grime’, and ‘Best Album’. other winners from the world of BritHop were; Mist who won ‘Best Video’, Dave -‘Best Newcomer’, J Hus -‘Best Song’, and Stefflon Don who picked up the award for ‘Best Female’.
The MOBO Pre Award show took place on Monday, November 20, 2017, in a smaller more intimate setting, in a ceremony where the awards for ‘Best RnB/Soul’, ‘Best Gospel’, & ‘Best Jazz’ were presented to the winners ahead of the live televised show
All things considered the night went well, and was an improvement from last year which was tainted by a major mistake which saw RnB/Pop group WSTRN given an award that was meant for Abra Cadabra. This may have been part of the motivation for the MOBO’s to move away from the live broadcast to recorded one, and while it saved them from being embarrassed by any possible error being televised, it took away from the viewing experience on an award show for the viewers, as they already knew who had won the awards before the show.
