Hip-Hop personalities DJ Akademics and rapper Joe Budden feature in Complex’s new webisode #EverydayStruggle, where the two face-off against each other, giving their views on various issues from politics, news, music, sport and what’s hot in popular culture.
The rise of UK Rap and Grime over the last couple of years has seen artist touring the US, and gaining acknowledgement from US artist such as Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, Swizz Beatz, and more, so it was only going to be matter of time before the conversation about UK MCs Vs US MCs would resurface.
For over 30 years Americans have struggled to get with UK MCs, and tensions recently hit a new height when troublesome rapper, Azealia Banks lashed out in a series of tweet saying:
“The UK really can’t rap though. UK rap is just a disgrace to rap culture in general,” she began.
The ‘212’ rapper then continued to rip into UK culture, adding: “Rap/Hip-Hop culture is American in its purest form.
“UK rappers never have swag. It’s always forced.”
The biggest supporter of UK Hip-Hop and Grime out of the international rap stars without doubt is Drake, who took the bold step of featuring UK MCs Giggs and Skepta on his More Life album, resulting in loads of Americans lashing out at Giggs and UK MCs as a whole online.
In the April 20, episode of #EverydayStruggle, DJ Akademiks and Joe Budden go back-and-forth on whether or not Giggs’ verse on Drake’s “KMT” is trash or not and discuss UK Hip-Hop & Grime music in general. DJ Akademiks kicks things off by claiming that Giggs’ verse on ‘KMT’ was ‘wack’, but express edition that he thought Giggs as a artist is “Dope”, and that he likes the verse on ‘No long Talk’ more.
He later went on to state: “They’re rapping better than the average US rapper” from the ones that he has ‘studied’, and followed that statement with “they’re spitting more bars”. Joe Budden expanded on Akademik’s point highlighting that in the US, rap has evolved from being focus on lyrical content, to being more melody driven.
Whilst discussing the UK scene, Budden said: “They’re still using a lot of words out there when they rap. They’re great with flows out there.” He acknowledged that UK has some talent MC giving props to Skepta, Giggs, and Stormzy calling them”Dope”.
